Summit School 2nd & 3rd Grade Classroom Building
Summit School, an independent private school, kindergarten through ninth grade, selected Frank L. Blum Construction Co. to build a new 15,000-square-foot two-story, 2nd and 3rd grade classroom building, connected to the existing 1st grade building. Simultaneous construction of an athletic center and continuous operation of existing school facilities during construction made safety of children, parents, faculty and staff of primary importance. Extensive pre-construction planning mapped out safe routes to and from school buildings and outside play areas as well as possible emergency routes.
A fast track approach was used for this project, allowing for the compressed schedule, but requiring early work on site and release of critical work packages beforel drawings were complete. Careful pre-planning and communication was instituted from the beginning.
Summit School, with a history of teaching and modeling environmental awareness, planned the building to meet guidelines of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. It will be the first independent school in North Carolina with a LEED-certified building.
Blum overcame the challenge of having an adjacent neighborhood and access to very little staging area through careful planning and attention to detail, and coordination of deliveries around the 8 am to 3 pm school schedule.

| I am pleased in looking back over my 22 years at Wake Forest to see how important Frank L. Blum Construction Company has been for us. Whenever the job is especially difficult and time intensive, both I and my Director of Facilities, Bill Sides, turn to your firm.
Examples of your excellent work abound; the gatehouses which protect the campus at night, which were done on an extremely tight time schedule; Kirby Wing of Calloway Center, perhaps our most beautiful new space; and the new and renovated Pit, which was delivered 2 1/2 weeks early and under budget. The amount your firm saved us on the Kirby Wing was sufficient to finish all of the planned-to-be-vacant space in the basement! Of course, your signature building is the Mary and Charlie Babcock Wing at Reynolda House, a superb structure built on schedule and on budget. It is a magnificant addition to the museum.
You and your people have exhibited the kind of professional, competent, and helpful spirit a client would want. I can and do recommend you most highly and without reservation. |
