Blum Construction has enjoyed a decades-long partnership with Wake Forest Baptist Health, and that experience was crucial when it was time for a major upgrade to WFBH’s decades-old power plant. Due to the location of the building and the necessary service tie-ins to the electrical, oxygen, heating and cooling systems for the entire medical center, meticulous planning was needed to carefully time and sequence the temporary shutdown of various systems.
The completed structure is a two-story concrete frame set on 45- to 55-foot-deep concrete caissons. Building and utility tie-ins were made to both the existing power plant building and the piping distribution system. A new 750 KW Generator with associated gear and a 1,600-ton Carrier Chiller were installed in the existing power plant; a 100,000 PPH Babcox Wilcox Boiler and 1750 KW Generator were installed in the addition. The completed facility allowed enough space for an additional boiler to be added in the future, if needed, and the campus’ main oxygen tank storage facility was relocated to the power plant.
