South Hall

Winston-Salem, North Carolina

Project Owner: Wake Forest University

Designer: Hanbury Evans Wright Vlattas + Company

Frank L. Blum Construction Company was chosen by Wake Forest University to build South Hall, a new 60,492-square-foot, four-story, LEED® Gold freshman residence hall. Among many features, the building includes a Lucid Building Dashboard monitoring system to capture metered information and serve as a sustainability teaching tool for its 200 residents, and a system of 40 roof-top solar panels to heat domestic water.

Site logistics and safety were primary concerns since the site is between streets that serve students, faculty, and staff on the front side, and families whose homes are nestled in the neighborhood in the back. Deliveries, equipment, supplies, and construction noise were strictly monitored to respect neighbors, as well as to coordinate with semester exams, graduation, and other campus activities.
