The Flammable Storage Facility Project for EcoLab is currently underway and slated for completion in April 2017. Designed by Moser Mayer Phoenix Associates of Greensboro, the 10,000-square-foot facility is required to be explosion-proof to house chemicals with a hazardous classification which are used in Ecolab's production facility.
Renovations to the third floor of the Graylyn Conference Center Manor House began in November. The 7,800-square-foot project, designed by Winston-Salem based CJMW Architecture, involves the existing guest quarters, corridors, and sitting areas on the third floor. The conference and lodging spaces will remain operational and occupied throughout the duration of the project. The project is scheduled for completion in 2017.
Renovations and additions to Strickland Place at Fitzgerald Health Center in the Arbor Acres Retirement Community have updated the building that Blum constructed more than 30 years ago into a beautiful, enticing environment. The work was highly phased to minimize disruptions to residents and their families. The 94,000-square-foot project, designed by Winston-Salem-based Lambert Architecture + Interiors, included reconfiguring all the common areas to create more open spaces. Significant improvements to the public areas of the building make it more accommodating to residents and their families, and provide increased opportunities for interacting socially in an environment that engages all the senses. In addition to the many cosmetic changes, the renovation included upgrading the building's HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and fire suppression systems, as well as revitalization of the exterior.
Givens Highland Farms' Meadowmont Phase II is underway in Black Mountain, NC. Designed by Lancaster, Pennsylvania-based RLPS Architects, the project involves construction of 24 residential units in three different layouts. The six duplex units and two six-plex units combine to equal 44,578 square feet in total. The project is slated for completion in early 2018. This project comes on the heels of Blum's recent completion of Meadowmont Phase I which consisted of 18 independent living units.
Blum Construction has been selected as the Construction Manager for the new BB&T Leadership Institute Conference Center and Hotel located in Greensboro, NC. The 54,000-square-foot project, designed by Winston-Salem-based CJMW Architecture, is slated for completion in the first quarter of 2018. The project consists of a center spine housing the Institute's conference center, and is flanked on both sides with 3-stories of hotel rooms. Also included in the project is an elevated tree house that will hold up to 20 people.
The Cone Health's Horse Pen Creek MOB was recently awarded to Frank L. Blum Construction Company. Developed by CIP Construction Company, and designed by TFF Architects, the approximately 13,000-square-foot primary care medical office building will house medical offices, waiting rooms, examination rooms, and other staff support areas. It will also include specialty areas for radiology, sports medicine, ultrasounds, and behavioral health. Construction is anticipated to begin in March 2017 with final completion occurring by November 2017.
The Carolyn and Maurice LeBauer City Park, a three-acre park in downtown Greensboro, has been completed. The highly anticipated park boasts a market square, performance space, food truck plaza, games plaza, fountain court, children's garden, arts plaza, a dog park, and the Carolyn LeBauer Gardens. The Price/Bryan Performance Place is highlighted by a one-of-a-kind billowing net sculpture designed by Massachusetts-based artist Janet Echelman. Echelman's sculpture, titled "Where We Met," is the largest outdoor art installation in the Southeast.
Blum Construction has partnered with T. A. Loving Company to construct the Dowdy Ficklen Stadium Press Box Renovation Project at East Carolina University. The project includes demolition of the existing press box, constructed in 1978, and construction of a new press box for the Pirates. The new press box will provide state-of-the-art technology and will accommodate all personnel for game day events, inclusive of suite and lounge areas with a variety of seating options for fans, donors, and alumni. Renovations to the student athlete academic support areas and training/locker spaces, along with 512 tailgating spaces, will be included in the project. Demolition is expected to begin in 2017 with a construction completion date
set for 2018.
Frank L. Blum Construction Company recently completed the expansion phase for the Ruff Housing Witt Street facility. The dog daycare and lodging facility more than doubled their original space. Blum renovated the warehouse space adjacent to the original facility to house new indoor and outdoor play areas, overnight accommodations, and many more amenities. Ruff Housing is now in the midst of partnering with Blum and Greensboro-based Smith Architecture, PA on Phase II, which involves renovating the existing facility in the spring of 2017.
Frank L. Blum Construction Company completed Phase II of the Kitchin Hall Renovation project for Wake Forest University in August, putting the final exterior touches on the 277 bed facility. The 66,830-square-foot, four-story building was constructed in 1953 as part of the original campus. Although various modifications have taken place over the years, the building had never undergone a major renovation. The project scope included replacing the existing HVAC systems, plumbing, data cabling, and the majority of the electrical systems. Exterior improvements included window and door replacement, exterior handrails to meet current code, roof repair, downspout repair and replacement, building waterproofing, soffit and fascia repair and replacement, painting of exterior surfaces, and removal of elements not in keeping with the building's original exterior. Interior improvements included some student room reconfiguration, bathroom replacement, ADA improvements including a new elevator, and student common area improvements. The project, designed by Norfolk, Virginia-based Hanbury Evans Wright Vlattas + Company, was performed in two phases over the summers of 2015 and 2016.
Frank L. Blum Construction Company recently completed Phase 1 of the Poteat and Huffman Halls Maintenance and Repair Project for Wake Forest University. Refurbishment of both buildings was finalized in August, before the fall semester began. The project, designed by Hanbury Evans Wright Vlattas + Company of Norfolk, VA, includes renovation of approximately 71,000 square feet, which will be performed in two phases around the academic calendar. Phase II is expected begin in May of 2017 and reach final completion in August 2017.
Frank L. Blum Construction Company recently completed the expansion of the Greensboro offices of Kay Chemical Company, a subsidiary of Ecolab. Designed by Greensboro-based Moser Mayer Phoenix Associates, the project consists of a new 37,500-square-foot office building addition. The expansion will help the company capitalize on demand from the quick-service restaurant industry and Ecolab's growing retail food services division, which focus on supplying products to grocery stores and supermarkets. The other two phases include renovations to 37,000 square feet of existing office space, expansion of the current parking facilities, and new entrance drives for trucks and employees, all of which are scheduled to be completed in late 2016.
Our Safety Manager, John Gardner, accepted the 2015 Silver Safety Award from the N.C. Department of Labor. Commissioner Cherie Berry presented the award to Blum in recognition of outstanding safety and health efforts, and promotion of safer working conditions. Our success is a result of our continued commitment to a safe workplace.
The Salem Academy and College Tennis Courts Renovation, designed by Winston-Salem based Stimmel Associates, PA, was recently completed by Blum Construction. The project employed an underdrain system and asphalt overlay to manage sub-surface water in preparation of the final acrylic court surfacing. The facility was recently completed and a ribbon cutting ceremony was held on August 23rd.
The new tennis facility was dedicated to Salem College professor Norbert F. "Bert" Lain for his lifelong support of women's education, including physical education that takes place on athletic courts and fields. Salem Academy Director of Athletics Lorie Howard said, "A premier tennis facility will attract premier student athletes." Apparently, she is on point because, for the last two years, every member of the Academy's varsity tennis team has been named to the Triad Athletic Conference Academic All-Conference list, maintaining a grade point average of at least 3.5.
Blum was recognized as one of "The Best Places to Work in The Triad" by the Triad Business Journal a few weeks ago. Winners were determined by national research firm Quantum Workplace, and based on employee responses to a survey gauging factors ranging from workplace engagement to executive commitment. The 17 finalists were honored at an Awards Banquet in Greensboro.
On August 21st, the 14,000-square-foot AFAS Center for the Arts' building reached its highest point and was celebrated with a traditional "Topping-Out" ceremony. The ART for ART's Sake staff, along with the construction and design teams, were joined by members of the community to celebrate the placing of the final beam on the new 3-story building. Guests were invited to sign the steel beam and observe its placement as it was hoisted by crane to its new home atop the new building. The completed building, designed by STITCH Design Shop, along with the adjoining ARTivity on the Green art park, also operated by AFAS, will change the face of Liberty and Seventh Streets and be a huge asset to the community. The building is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2017.
Wake Forest University selected Frank L. Blum Construction Company to renovate the third floor of the Graylyn Conference Center Manor House. The 7,800-square-foot project will involve renovation work to the existing guest quarters, corridors, and sitting areas on the third floor.
The construction phase will occur during periods of time when the remainder of the building will be operational and occupied as conference and lodging space. The project will not fall under any Historic property requirements, but the intent of the design by CJMW Architecture is to complement the style and quality of the Manor House and respect the existing historic design elements of the building. The project is scheduled to start in November 2016 and be completed in early 2017.
Frank L. Blum Construction Company is working diligently to complete construction of the Southern Family Court Seating at the Wake Forest University Tennis Complex. When complete, the project will add 718 permanent, chair-back seats around all six courts. The seating will be highly appealing to spectators, and the expanded venue is expected to host more prestigious events. The project, designed by Walter Robbs Callahan & Pierce Architects of Winston-Salem, will be completed in time for the Winston-Salem Open in August.
ARTivity on the Green, completed by Frank L. Blum Construction Company last year, was selected as a recipient of the 2016 AIA of Winston-Salem Award by the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Community Appearance Commission. This award recognizes projects for architectural excellence.
McHugh Sisters Flats is the first new student housing construction at Salem College in fifty years. The $6 million, 32,000-square-foot apartment-style residence hall was designed by CJMW Architecture and constructed by Frank L. Blum Construction Company in partnership with the leadership team of Salem Academy and College.
Salem College's McHugh Sisters Flats received the 2016 Mayor's Award from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Community Appearance Commission. The Mayor's Award recognizes new construction within the City of Winston-Salem that has both a visual and economic role in the revitalization of the downtown area.
Demolition has started on the 42,000-square-foot building, located at 505 N. Liberty Street, which will be the home of the National Cycling Center. Most of the interior has been gutted, and asbestos abatement has been completed, providing a clean slate for the new space designed by Lambert Architecture + Interiors. When complete, the 103-year-old building, which previously housed Brown-Rogers-Dixson's retail and hardware business, is expected to bring national attention to the Winston-Salem community.
The first floor will include a cafe, restaurant and/or brewpub tenants. The second floor will be dedicated solely to the cycling center, including 10 two-person dorm rooms, a kitchen and nutrition center, a training center and an office for metabolic testing. The third floor will be converted into four residential apartments and a rooftop deck. The basement will house additional training services provided by Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
Slated for completion in 2017, the facility could eventually be designated an official U.S. Olympic Committee training site and be adorned with the coveted Olympic rings.
The new Art for Art's Sake Center for the Arts is now underway. Crews are in the process of installing underground utilities for the new 14,000-square-foot building adjacent to ARTivity on the Green, which was also constructed by Blum. The Center for the Arts, designed by Winston-Salem's STITCH Design Shop, will include the AFAS boardroom, leasable artist studio space, leasable office space, two art galleries, and the new home of the Unleashed Arts Center. The project is expected to be completed in the spring of 2017.
Demolition of the existing 42,000 square-foot building made way for the CenterPoint Human Services Groundbreaking Ceremony held in early April. Construction of the new 44,000 square-foot facility, the Highland Avenue Center, is underway and making good progress. Designed by CJMW Architecture of Winston-Salem, approximately 33,000 square feet on the first floor of the new facility will be fully finished construction. The remaining 11,000 square feet on the second floor, with the exception of the plumbing, mechanical and electrical infrastructure, will be left as shell space for a future up-fit. The Highland Avenue Center is scheduled to be completed in early 2017
