Magnolia & Dogwood Residence Halls

Winston-Salem, North Carolina

Project Owner: Wake Forest University

Designer: Hanbury Evans Wright Vlattas + Company

Frank L. Blum Construction Company was selected for the construction of 485 new beds for upper class students. This challenging project consisted of two buildings surrounding a central courtyard, and was to be designed and constructed in twenty months. This was particularly challenging because the site infrastructure had to be brought through the active campus to the site, and the building required deep foundations to combat concerns with the soil stability.

Blum worked with the owner and design team to explore several different structural systems until a collective decision was made to utilize the Infinity load-bearing steel stud system with Epicore deck. This system allowed for wall sections to be prefabricated off-site and erected very quickly.

Prefabrication was also utilized for the HVAC components of the project, with almost all assemblies being built first in the shop. The end result was a project that was constructed in only 16 months, and opened on time and on budget for an eager student body.
